How teams qualify for the Round of 32
2026 is the first 48-team World Cup, so qualification works differently. The 12 group winners and 12 runners-up go through automatically — that's 24 teams — plus the 8 best third-placed teams across all groups, for 32 into the new Round of 32 knockout stage. Finishing third isn't automatically out: goal difference, then goals scored, decide the best-third race.

Teams level on points are separated first by goal difference, then by goals scored across all group matches. If still level, FIFA uses head-to-head results between the tied teams (points, then goal difference, then goals scored), then fair-play points, and finally a drawing of lots. Our tables are sorted by points, then goal difference.
